Getting Through the First Few Weeks After a Death

The first few weeks are often the hardest following the death of a loved one. While the bereavement process is different for everyone, most people find it difficult to balance their grief with obligations such as preparing funeral services. Some family members find that the grief hits the hardest after the services have ended. If you find yourself struggling after experiencing a loss, consider these suggestions.

Focus on the Now

While you may want to fast-forward past the grieving period, this is not a solution. Instead of wondering when things will get back to normal, focus on the here and now. Although it can be difficult, itís important to face the grief head-on and deal with it in your own way before moving on. Remain calm and do not put pressure on yourself to feel Ďnormalí again so soon.

Work Together

Trying to deal with everything yourself after the death of a loved one can be very overwhelming. If possible, enlist help from family and friends. Whether youíre dividing up the belongings of the deceased or trying to decide which person gets what, you will want to do your best to work together with others to reach a favorable outcome.

If youíre dealing with conflict regarding possessions, remember that you donít need to hold on to things that the person owned. Instead of relying on items to memorialize your loved one, focus on the memories that youíve shared.

Create a Safety Net

The loss of a loved one is one of the hardest things you will ever go through. If at all possible, donít go through it alone. Having a network of friends and family available to talk to can make a big difference during the initial grieving period. Gain comfort from the people around you as you get through those difficult first few weeks.
