4 Ways to Help a Loved One Who is Grieving

Coping with loss is never easy. In fact, the grieving process can be one of the most stressful events a person will ever experience. If your loved one has recently dealt with a great loss, do your best to provide support and validation. Here are a few simple ways to console a grieving loved one.

1. Open the Lines of Communication
When someone passes, it can be hard to find the right words to say. You may feel awkward as if nothing you say will help the situation. Many people make the mistake of not reaching out to avoid this discomfort. However, the best thing you can do is be genuine in your communication. Lending an ear to a loved one in need can make more of a difference then you realize. Proactively reach out to them and let them know you are here to help or listen.

2. Just Listen
Oftentimes, all a grieving person really wants is someone to listen. You donít need to figure out the ďrightĒ thing to say or give unsolicited advice. Simply let the person know that you are there to listen and that youíre open to hear anything they have to say Ė the good and the bad. Know that itís okay to feel emotional if a loved one is hurting. Donít be afraid to cry with that person. True empathy and compassion can be invaluable during the grieving process.

3. Offer a Helping Hand
When a loved one is grieving, itís easy to give a generic statement like ďIím here if you need anything!Ē However, this type of wording requires the grieving person to seek out your help. Most grieving individuals are unlikely to outright ask for assistance, especially if they are overwhelmed with emotions. Instead, find specific ways to help out. Whether itís temporary childcare or simply bringing over a few home cooked meals, show how much you care through your actions.

4. Be Understanding Towards Others
Not everyone grieves in the same way. It is important to be understanding and not get easily offended if your loved one says they want space. Oftentimes, spending time alone to reflect on the trauma can be helpful in the recovery process. While you want to respect your loved oneís wishes, be sure to let them know that you are just a phone call away if they need to talk.

One of the best things you can do for someone who is grieving is to simply be there. With the right support and comfort, your loved one may find it easier to cope with their loss.
