Carl W. Nickerson

Carl W. "Bill" Nickerson, peacefully passed into eternal life on Monday, December 4, 2017 at the age of 97, devoted husband of the late Grayce Nickerson (nee Carlson); loving father of William (Marianne) Nickerson, Carole (Dick) Ruggles, Joyce Nickerson, Shelley (Bill) Ralph, Craig (Mary Ann) Nickerson and Gary (Gloria) Nickerson; dearest grandfather of 7 and great grandfather of 5. Born and raised in Chicago, Bill met Grayce, his wife of 70 years, on a blind date while in high school. Following a long courtship and engagement, they were married in 1944 just as Bill went off to war. After arduous training, Bill became a Navy pilot with the Black Cat Squadron. Piloting "Black Cats" (flying boats), he flew reconnaissance missions in the combat area of the South Pacific during the dark of night. Returning from war, Bill and Grayce settled in the Chicago area and then moved to Evergreen Pk. where they raised 6 children. Bill became a successful businessman opening Portable Equipment, a construction equipment company; PECO, an auto & truck rental/sales company; and "C" Thomas Chevrolet, an auto dealership. Community involvement was also a priority for Bill, serving as school board president for District #124. Church involvement for Bill included acting-president of the congregation and adult education leader for Bethlehem Lutheran Church in the Beverly area of Chicago and, later, treasurer and council member of All Saints Lutheran Church in Orland Park. Making Orland Park his home since 1976, Bill's many interests included: aviation, automobiles, boating, travel, home improvement projects and voracious reading. Lying in State Friday 10:00 A.M. until time of Funeral Service at 11:00 A.M. at The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 7800 W. McCarthy Rd. Palos Heights, IL 60463. Interment Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Wounded Warrior Project or charity of choice would be appreciated. Funeral Info: 708-429-3200
