Thomas R. Henley
With great sadness we announce the passing of Thomas Rex Henley (T. Rex) age 87, of Orland Park, IL, on March 11, 2020. Born in Chicago on May 4th 1932 (5-4-3-2). He was preceded in death by his parents Don & Virginia (Hammond), his son Mark, and his former wife Barbara (Gavin). He is remembered with love by his wife Merrilee (Peters), and his children: Karen (Larry) Cole, Michael (Julie), Donna (Jeff) Shepard, Christina (Michael) Hitchcock, Patrick, and Timothy (Jo). He was a proud Grandfather of James, Shannon, Sara, Jeffery, Thomas, Elizabeth, Margaret, Christopher, Brianna, Rowan, and Grace along with fifteen Great-grandchildren. Tom will also be fondly remembered by his brother Wayne, his in-laws Art & Nancy Jo Peters and Arlene & Donald Latronica and 10 nieces and nephews. Tom grew up in Chicago, often reminiscing of the adventures he had as a child, haunting the streets on his red Schwinn bicycle. He moved to Homewood, Il., in 1958, after being discharged from the Air Force in 1956. Tom was a Homewood Il., mail carrier for many years, retiring in 1987. He then joined the R. D. Irwin Company, permanently retiring in 1997. While living in Homewood, he worked at the Homewood Movie Theatre, continuously cultivating his love of film. He moved to Orland Park, Il in 1994, where he lived out the remainder of his years. Tom loved spending time with his large family. He had a passion for "junking" and was legendary for renovating finds. He maintained childlike wonder his whole life: collecting model airplanes, flipping into pools, marveling over VW Bugs, and prioritizing play above all. His love of gardening was renowned, and his green thumb will certainly be the stuff of legend. A memorial visitation to celebrate Tom's life will be held at a later date.
